A study by Prove AI shows that 96% of organizations, out of the 600 surveyed across the USA, UK, and Germany, have already started using AI in their operations. Out of this, only 5% reported that they have an AI governance framework in place. This gap could lead to non-compliance and the resulting fines and penalties.

What Does an AI Compliance Officer Do?
An AI compliance officer is someone who makes sure that every AI system that the company uses or builds is doing what it is supposed to do and staying within the established rules. Some of the everyday activities of an AI compliance officer are:
- Checking that high-risk AI systems have gone through the proper sign-off process before they are used.
- Keeping the documentation that regulators would ask for.
- Setting up ways to monitor AI systems after they go live, because a system that works fine on launch day can start behaving oddly six months later.
- Being the person regulators contact when they have questions.
- Making sure staff who work with AI actually understand it well enough to spot problems.

Is an AI Compliance Officer the Same as a Data Protection Officer?

A Data Protection Officer (DPO) is a mandatory role created through GDPR, while an AI compliance officer is an optional role that is necessary to maintain the integrity of your AI systems. Due to this difference in responsibilities, a DPO is often an expert in privacy laws and completely understands the flow of data across the organization from a security and privacy context. On the other hand, an AI compliance officer specializes in AI risk and auditing, and likely requires a combination of technical and legal expertise.
Both roles, however, are independent and report directly to the Board for transparency and legitimacy.
That said, it is also common for a DPO to add AI governance capabilities to take on the AI compliance role. But this is more common in small and medium-sized companies rather than large enterprises, as the volume of work cannot be handled by a single individual.

2. Being Able to Explain What the AI Is Doing
This one catches a lot of companies out. If your AI makes a decision that affects someone, you have to be able to explain how it reached that decision. The law requires it. So does basic fairness.
In practice, you work with developers to document the system’s logic in a way that can be understood. Where that is genuinely not possible, your organization must say so clearly and manage the risk that comes with it. Hiding behind ‘it’s complicated’ is not a defense that regulators will accept.
3. Keeping the System Accurate Over Time
AI systems change their behaviour over time even when nobody touches the code. It has been observed that they pick up patterns from new data, and those patterns are not always good ones. For example, a hiring tool trained on your last five years of successful hires might start filtering out candidates in ways you did not intend and did not notice.
As the AI Officer, you must set up monitoring so the company can see when this is happening. When something goes seriously wrong, the law requires the company to report it to the regulator quickly. That reporting obligation sits with the AI Officer.
4. Being Ready for an Audit
If a regulator decides to audit an AI system, the company needs to be able to produce documentation showing how the system was built, tested, and monitored. For the highest-risk systems, an independent third party has to carry out part of that assessment.
It’s your responsibility to keep these records organized. Also, you must manage the relationship with auditors and regulators. This means you must understand enough about the technical side to know whether the documentation actually reflects what the system does.
5. Making Sure the AI Is Fair
This is the area that creates the most reputational risk. AI systems used to screen job applicants, decide credit limits, or assess benefits claims can discriminate against people without anyone intending it. The data the system was trained on might reflect old biases. The questions it was built to optimize for might produce skewed results.
To address these issues, you must work with the data and product teams to catch these problems. That means looking at outcomes across different groups of people, not just checking whether the algorithm looks correct on paper.
All these responsibilities require a certain technical knowledge and understanding of the training data and how the systems were built. It is also important to stay on top of the changing AI regulations.
What Background Do You Need?
There is no single path into this role, which is actually good news. People are getting hired into AI Officer positions from law, compliance, audit, data protection, and even policy backgrounds. What matters is a combination of things that most compliance professionals already have and a willingness to learn the AI-specific parts.
The technical bar is real, but it is not as high as people assume. You do not need to write code. But you do need to understand enough about how AI systems work to have a credible conversation with the people who build them, read an audit report intelligently, and spot when something does not add up.

- The IAPP’s AI Governance Professional qualification, known as the AIGP. This is becoming the standard credential for the field.

- The Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) is especially useful if you are moving across from a data protection role.
- ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer, for companies that want a certified AI management system.
In terms of career progression, you often start as a Compliance Analyst, then AI Compliance Specialist, then AI Compliance Manager, then Director of AI Governance, and eventually Chief AI Ethics Officer. Most of the current demand is at the manager and director level.

Compliance as a profession has always moved with regulation. When GDPR arrived, experienced compliance people who upskilled in data protection did very well. If you already work in compliance, you have skills that are directly relevant: you know how to read regulations and translate them into policy, you know how to run audits, and you know how to work across departments without being part of any of them.
